Tamil Nadu Installs Green Anti-Glare Screens For Enhanced Road Safety

Green-coloured small pillars are being installed on the centre median of national highways across Tamil Nadu. These installations are happening at select locations only. They aim to enhance the safety of motorists travelling on these roads. Previously seen mainly in foreign countries, these installations are now being introduced in India.

National highways play a crucial role across India, with crores of vehicles using them daily. To ensure a hassle-free journey, the roads are divided by a centre median for safety. Typically, plants are grown and maintained on the centre median to avoid the disturbance caused by vehicle headlights during night hours.

Green Screens Boost Tamil Nadu Highway Safety

However, there are instances where there is no space on the centre median to grow plants. In such places, cement slabs are used instead. This can cause headlights to disturb motorists coming from the opposite lane. To address this issue, small green pillar-like installations called Anti-Glare Screens are being installed where plants cannot be grown.

These installations block the headlights of vehicles coming from the opposite direction, reducing disturbances for vehicles using high beams. The first phase of this project covers a 194 km stretch from Villupuram to Nagapattinam, which was turned into a four-way national highway about two years ago.

The vehicles on these highways travel at speeds of 80 - 100 km/hr. Here, the centre median is built with concrete roads due to the lack of space for plants. A 4-meter wide space is required for growing plants on the centre median. Without this space, concrete slabs are used, causing headlight disturbances for oncoming vehicles.

To mitigate this issue, the National Highways department is installing Anti-Glare Screens. These green-coloured rod-like installations are placed in sequence at certain gaps to block lights from vehicles coming from the opposite direction during night hours.

Additionally, reflective stickers have been placed in the middle to indicate the road's path. These stickers help drivers see the road clearly and drive without disturbances from oncoming traffic.

Currently, these Anti-Glare Screens are installed only on the Villupuram - Nagapattinam National Highway. If successful, this initiative may be extended to other parts of Tamil Nadu, especially in dangerous areas where such installations could significantly improve road safety.

DriveSpark Thinks

The new anti-glare screens being tested on highways on Tamil Nadu's highways are an innovative solutions that combats road safety issues. These screens address a common safety concern (headlight glare) with a potentially simple and affordable solution (green pillars). The pilot program is a good step towards a nationwide improvement for driver safety.
