Government Rules Out E10 Petrol Option, E20 To Remain The Standard Fuel

Consumers in India will have no choice regarding ethanol-blended petrol such as E10 and E20, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas clarified recently. This comes amid growing concerns and reports claiming that ethanol-blended fuel offers lower fuel efficiency.

E20 Fuel Blending

Ethanol blending is a process aimed at reducing crude oil imports and saving India's valuable foreign exchange. Whenever there is a global disruption, India becomes vulnerable as it depends heavily on imported crude oil.

E20

Being one of the world's largest crude oil-importing countries, India has decided to become more self-reliant by exploring alternative fuels. One key method is blending ethanol with petrol, which can significantly reduce import costs while also supporting local farmers, as ethanol is primarily produced from agricultural products.

Blending ethanol allows the government to keep petrol prices under control while also helping local farmers generate additional revenue. However, the move has not received an entirely positive response, as several consumers have raised concerns that ethanol blending could reduce fuel efficiency and potentially damage vehicle engines.

The government has dismissed these concerns and assured consumers that ethanol does not damage engines that are compatible with ethanol-blended fuel, apart from a slight decrease in fuel efficiency due to its lower energy density. It has also directed OEMs to manufacture vehicles that are compatible with ethanol-blended fuel.

Now, E20 has become the standard petrol across India and is widely available at fuel stations. However, many consumers are demanding more choices so that they can use fuel according to the requirements of their vehicles.

No Choice Between E10 and E20 Petrol

E20

Many people want options such as E10 and E20 so that owners of older vehicles can continue using lower ethanol-blended petrol instead of the standard 20% ethanol blend.

However, the government has declined the request, citing logistics and operational challenges if multiple fuel options are introduced. The country has already invested more than Rs 1 lakh crore in developing ethanol infrastructure, as it considers ethanol blending to be the future of India's fuel strategy.

According to the government, offering multiple petrol options would increase costs and make it more difficult for fuel suppliers to provide a consistent and reliable service. Therefore, optional E10 fuel cannot be implemented under the current circumstances. For consumer seeking alternative petrol, several oil corporations are already offering pure petrol, but at nearly double the cost of E20 petrol.
