Self-Driving Cars Get Big Boost In India As Government Eases Radar Rules

The Indian government has removed the obstacles for self-driving and advanced safety technologies in cars by removing the licence requirement for radar sensors. This major decision is expected to help automakers introduce safer and smarter vehicles in the country.

India is one of the world's largest automotive markets, but it also records a high number of road accidents every year. Car makers are bringing several advanced safety features like standard airbags, ADAS and emergency features. But even then the number of daily accidents occuring in the country are some of the highest in the world.

Radar Sensor Rule For Self-Driving Cars Removed by Government

With this removal, the government aims to improve road safety by allowing easier use of modern crash-prevention technologies. The new rule removes the licence requirement for radar sensors operating in the 77GHz to 81GHz band. These radar systems are important for features like automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot detection, and lane assistance. These technologies form the base for self-driving and semi-autonomous vehicles.

Apart from radar systems, the government has also eased rules for Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication technology. This allows vehicles to communicate with each other and road infrastructure, helping drivers detect dangers that may not be visible directly, such as sudden braking ahead or emergency vehicles approaching.

Enhance ADAS And Self-Driving Technology Adoption

This decision will benefit major carmakers in India like Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, and Mahindra & Mahindra who are currently offering ADAS technologies in India. Global luxury brands like Mercedes-Benz, Tesla, BYD, Volvo and BMW can also introduce their international level ADAS technologies more easily in India.

India now wants to align with global standards followed in the US and Europe. This could help make advanced safety features more affordable and accessible for Indian car buyers in the coming years. Also, improving safety in mobility is also one another key reason of making these decisions.
