Government Cuts Excise Duties On High Ethanol-Blended Petrol: Fuel Prices To Get Cheaper?

The Indian government has waived excise duty on select ethanol-blended fuels to accelerate flex-fuel adoption in the country. As a result, certain fuel grades could become more affordable than conventional petrol.

Rising global geopolitical tensions have contributed to fluctuations in crude oil prices, making India increasingly vulnerable to fuel import costs. In response, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has announced measures aimed at promoting alternative fuels and reducing dependence on imported crude oil.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has already been actively promoting higher ethanol blends and flex-fuel vehicle adoption. India has successfully rolled out E20 fuel nationwide, while higher ethanol blends are expected to be introduced in phases.

Future fuel grades such as E25, E27, and E30 are expected to further reduce the country's reliance on crude oil imports. Alongside electric vehicles, flex-fuel vehicles are emerging as a key solution in India's transition towards cleaner and more sustainable mobility.

Recently, Hero MotoCorp introduced two new flex-fuel motorcycles, while Maruti Suzuki showcased the WagonR Flex Fuel prototype. These vehicles are capable of operating on ethanol blends of up to E100 under suitable conditions. Indian Oil has already commenced the rollout of E85 fuel stations, with one of the first outlets operational in New Delhi.

The fuel is currently priced at around Rs 82.12 per litre, making it more affordable than conventional petrol in some cases. The company is also planning to expand E85 fuel availability across major cities, including Delhi-NCR, Pune, Mumbai, and Nagpur. The reduction in excise duties is expected to encourage consumers to consider flex-fuel vehicles while also supporting the wider adoption of ethanol-based fuels.

The government is reportedly targeting the establishment of around 500 ethanol fuel stations by the end of 2026. At the same time, existing vehicle owners will continue to have access to E20 fuel, which remains compatible with the majority of current petrol-powered vehicles sold in India.

With the growing availability of flex-fuel vehicles and higher ethanol-blended fuels, India is gradually moving towards a model similar to Brazil, where ethanol plays a significant role in the transportation sector. These initiatives are aimed at reducing crude oil imports, improving energy security, and conserving valuable foreign exchange reserves.
