Google Maps Fail - Tourist Drives Kia Seltos Up Church Stairs In Goa
We've all been there-trusting Google Maps implicitly, even when our gut (or our eyes) tells us otherwise. But for one tourist from Telangana in Chaudi, Goa, that faith in the little blue dot led to an altogether unforgettable -and rather awkward - misadventure.
According to reports from multiple Goan publications, our unsuspecting motorist was simply trying to join National Highway 66, the major coastal highway that connects Mumbai to Kanyakumari.
When Google Maps suggested a faster route, he dutifully turned off the main road and towards the St. Theresa of Jesus Church, which does have a legitimate road that connects to NH66. However, instead of turning down this road, he mistakenly turned into the church compound and then tried to go down the steps in an attempt to join the highway.
With engines humming and confidence high, he slowly rolled forward. The undercarriage scraped, the bumper wedged against solid masonry, and the driver's hopeful "just a few more feet" became a standoff between metal and stone, which eventually led to the Kia Seltos getting stuck on the steps.
Thankfully, no one was injured. Curious villagers and other motorists hurried to the scene, offering assistance. After a few tense minutes-and a little collective muscle- the car was coaxed backwards, off the steps, and back onto the church courtyard, where he explained his Google Maps mishap.
Online Maps Aren't Always The Solution - Common Sense Counts Too
This episode isn't the only time navigation apps have led drivers astray, which in some cases have led to unfortunate fatalities. The lesson? Digital maps are marvels of modern convenience, but they're only as good as the data behind them-and they can't replace common sense. Here are a few tips to keep you on track:
- Scan the route before you go: If your app suggests an unfamiliar shortcut, pause and zoom out. Does it really look like a through-road, or is it just a walking path, alleyway, or staircase?
- Trust-but verify: When approaching odd turns, glance at satellite view or street-level imagery. If it doesn't look drivable, don't risk it.
- Stick to the main arteries: Even if it means tacking on five extra minutes, highways and well-paved rural roads are usually the safer bet.
- Keep local knowledge in mind: Ask for directions from people nearby if something seems off. Villagers, shopkeepers, or fellow drivers often know hidden obstacles that digital maps miss.
