New Valet Parking Robots For Germany's Dusseldorf Airport
Germany has recently taken valet parking one notch higher by introducing robots to park cars for customers at airports. Ray, the robot, began work last Tuesday.
Ray can be booked by customers via their smart phone. The customer then leaves his empty car in one of the designated spots and the robot does the rest.
With the help of laser scanners, the length and breadth of the car is carefully calculated along with where the bumpers and mirrors are. Ray or one of his robot colleagues pick up the car and then take it to one of the 249 reserved slots and drop it there.
Ray and his colleagues are essentially automated forklifts. The robots can lift vehicles up to 3 tons. Airport spokesman Thomas Koetter says the robots are fully insured.

Once the customer has decided to use this valet service, all he had to do is book it using his smartphone. Once booked, the customer simply has to drop off the car at what is called the Vehicle Transfer Station. After the customer assures his car is empty and is ready to be taken, Ray does his work with the help of scanners.
The customer will get a valet ticket in hand. There is no information about what happens if one loses the valet ticket, but we get the feeling the engineers would have thought of something in that case.
The valet parking services will cost $39 per day. Although it's open to everybody, the main focus will be business fliers.
