Gadkari Gets Hyundai Ioniq 5 – Here’s What Happened To His Toyota Mirai Hydrogen Car

Union Minister for the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), Nitin Gadkari, is known for his forward-thinking and proactiveness when it comes to alternate propulsion technologies. Reflecting his views, Gadkari has been using a hydrogen-powered Toyota Mirai for quite some time now.

However, in recent times, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has been spotted using a Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric crossover. As such, it raises the question of whether Gadkari has binned the idea of hydrogen-powered cars for India and embraced battery-operated electric vehicles.

Gadkari Gets Hyundai Ioniq 5

That being said, a recent video has popped up on social media where Bihar's c has been spotted using a Toyota Mirai hydrogen-powered car. According to Bihar's Deputy CM, the hydrogen-powered car was given to him by Gadkari himself.

Speaking about Gadkari's latest vehicle, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 is a fully electric vehicle. This model was launched in India at a special introductory price of Rs 44.95 lakh (ex-showroom).

In terms of powertrain, the Hyundai Ionq 5 comes equipped with a 72.6kWh battery pack and an electric motor capable of producing 215bhp and 350Nm of torque. According to ARAI, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 in this powertrain setup can cover 631 kilometres on a fully charged battery pack.

Speaking about the Toyota Mirai, the hydrogen-powered sedan is a fuel-cell electric vehicle, which means the model generates its own energy. Furthermore, the Toyota Miral used by Gadkari is the second-generation model.

Gadkari Now Uses Hyundai Ioniq 5

This second-generation Toyota Miral FCEV is powered by an 182bhp electric motor with 300Nm of torque. Moreover, the model sports 3 hydrogen tanks for a combined 141 litres of hydrogen storage.

Thanks to such a powertrain setup, the second-generation Toyota Mirai can cover a total distance of 647 kilometres under the EPA cycle. Also, the second-generation Toyota Mirai scored a 5-star safety rating at the Euro-NCAP crash test.

Thoughts About Nitin Gadkari's Latest Vehicle

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric crossover is a very capable electric vehicle with more than decent range to meet the requirements of Union Minister Nitin Gadkari himself. That being said, the Toyota Mirai and the FCEV tech are currently being evaluated and we expect positive results to come forward.
