Ultra-Rare Pininfarina-Made Ferrari Testarossa Spider Looks To Outrun Wallets At Auction
One of a limited number of Pinifarina-made Ferrari Testarossa Spiders is set to go up for sale at RM Sotheby's auction in London next month.
One of a limited number of Pinifarina made Ferrari Testarossa Spiders is set to go up for sale at RM Sotheby's auction in London next month.
This rather special Ferrari Testarossa Pinifarina Spider Special Production with just 413km on the clock is expected to fetch £1.8 Million at the auction on the 5th of November.
What makes this car very special is the fact that Ferrari never put the Testarossa Spider into series production. Ferrari only ever built one Testarossa Spider finished in Silver with a blue soft top that was built for then Fiat boss Gianni Agnelli.

However, you may have driven the Testarossa Spider, just not in real life. The Pininfarina Ferrari Testarossa Spider was made famous by the 1980s Sega Arcade game 'Outrun'. In the game, you got behind the wheel of a Testarossa Spider as your blond haired companion critiqued your driving style as you drove past checkpoints and other cars at speed.
The Testarossa Spider by Pininfarina that is going up for auction was built in 1990 but was never registered by its owner and only has 413 kilometres on the odometer. Prospective bidders have been asked to check with local authorities with relation to registering this car in their intended jurisdiction due to the lack of any recorded registration document.
Another quirky feature about these Pininfarina Testarossa Spider Special Production cars is their VIN number with the one up for auction numbered "EFG092". Unlike the 17 digit system used around the world, the Pininfarina Special production cars feature a truncated serial number convention that was made especially for these convertible creations.
This special Testarossa Spider spent most of its life as a static display until in 2021 it underwent restoration at Pininfarina and Zanasi.
It was first taken to Pininfarina's Cambiano facilities in March 2021, where technicians worked on the convertible hood, returning functionality to the open-and-close mechanism, along with a full repaint. One month later, the interior of the car was refreshed by the carrozzeria. Pininfarina's restoration job cost €94,300.
In November of the same year, the Testarossa Spider was taken to Carrozzeria Zanasi - the Maranello-based specialist used by the Ferrari factory for the finishing and paintwork of all Prancing Horse supercars, Tailor Made and Icona cars.
The specialists at Zanasi tended to the ultra rare convertible's mechanical condition. A new clutch and fuel pump were installed and the engine and suspension were disassembled, cleaned, and restored. The process to restore the Testarossa Spider to 'like-new' condition by Zanasi came up to a bill totalling €83,170.
Thoughts About The Testarossa Spider Up For Auction
The Testarossa Spider was something the Prancing Horse marque never got to do properly. This is what makes the ultra rare coach-built topless Ferrari Testarossa Pininfarina Spider Special Production so special for any serious car collector. That and all the drives behind the wheel on Outrun.
