Fast and Furious 9 Production Goes Wrong: A Million Dollar Fine for Negligence
The Fast and Furious series has been making waves in the box office since its inception, and currently boasts a portfolio of 11 films, including the spin-off Hobbs & Shaw. However, this thrilling franchise is not without its share of controversy. FF9 Pictures, the production company behind F9 – The Fast Saga, was recently slapped with a hefty fine of USD 1 million by Britain's Health And Safety Executives, following a serious on-set accident.
The Incident That Changed It All
The Fast and Furious franchise, which originally centered on the thrills of street racing in Los Angeles, has grown to encompass globe-trotting adventures, high-stakes heists, secret intelligence missions, and even plots involving nuclear power and world order. With such a grand scope, the action sequences are not only integral to the plot but also intensely demanding. This is where skilled stuntmen like Joe Watts come into play.

While filming for F9 - The Fast Saga in Leavesden, England, in July 2019, Joe Watts had to perform a stunt where he was thrown off a balcony by another actor. The first take went off without a hitch, but disaster struck during the reshoot. Watts' safety line got detached, causing him to plummet 8 meters onto hard concrete, missing the crash mat and sustaining a skull fracture and brain damage.
Investigations revealed that there was negligence on set, as the safety line wasn't double-checked for secure fastening between takes. Furthermore, the crash mat wasn't adequately spread out to prevent such mishaps. The outcome could have been fatal, and Watts was fortunate to survive.
The Fine and Its Implications
The accident highlighted the potential dangers faced by stuntmen and body doubles in the film industry, who are instrumental in filling our screens with adrenaline-fueled sequences. It took three long years for the production house to pay monetary compensation to Watts, a timeline filled with legal battles and delays.
Considering that Fast and Furious 9 raked in approximately USD 726 million worldwide, the USD 1 million fine, which equals roughly Rs. 8.33 Crore, represents less than 0.15% of the film's total earnings. There was also further installments after F9 - The Fast Saga, with Fast X launched in 2023, believed at the time to be the final installment.
Future of the Fast Franchise
Despite the end of the saga, the franchise's main cast members have confirmed that more Fast and Furious films are in the pipeline. This series, with its edge-of-the-seat action and dramatic plotlines, has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the global entertainment industry and its audience. One of the standout installments in the franchise for me is Tokyo Drift, primarily because of its minimal screen time for the character Dominic Toretto and complete absence of his family.
In conclusion, while the Fast and Furious franchise has provided plenty of heart-pounding action and entertainment, it's equally important to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the stunt performers who help bring these incredible sequences to life. Their work is essential, and they deserve to be treated with the utmost respect and care on set.
