EMP Equipped Jeep Developed By NATO Aims To Prevent Suicide Bombings
A lot many youngsters became familiar with the acronym EMP after playing Need For Speed racing video games. Standing for Electromagnetic Pulse, these short, but strong bursts of energy have the ability to cripple anything and everything that has any electronic component in it.
EMP generating devices are not new. However, the setup is usually bulky and not portable. A NATO funded research project in Norway, working on developing EMP generating devices has now demonstrated a setup which is small enough to fit inside a car and can generate pulses strong enough to disable a vehicle. In the same way you might have used an EMP burst to slow down a virtual car in Need For Speed.
One of the main purpose behind developing the vehicle equipped EMP device is to prevent suicide bombings which involve ramming a car filled with explosives. The usefulness could be extended further, by deploying EMP equipped patrol cars to halt culprits making an escape using cars.
In the demonstration video below we see a reporter's car coming to a complete and safe stop within seconds, by an EMP burst emitted from a Jeep Grand Cherokee. The device functions even when the Jeep is moving. What's also cool is that the pulse is activated at the press of button like in Fast & Furious movies.
