South Carolina Could Get Electronic License Plates

The idea is the brainchild of David Findlay, president of Columbia-based Compliance Innovations. Findlay plans to file the proposal with the state authorities, which if approved, will see digital plates replace the classic piece of automobile.
A digital license plate would come with a host of advantages, which will aid mostly with identifying expired plates or a vehicle that is uninsured or suspended by displaying the appropriate message. Moreover, a digital plate could be directly controlled by authorities.
Findlay says, the plate will get it power from sunlight and vehicle vibrations. He says, the plates will be sensitive enough to even get their power from a headlight shining behind them. An electronic license will reportedly last a decade.
Coming back to the question. Are these the future. Likely not. In theory a digital license will offer all the benefits mentioned and more. As far as the cost goes, lets says it can handled as well. However, in this age of technology anything digital is not safe. How long do would you think it would take someone to hack a digital license plate. Not long at all. As much as this sounds cool, the humble metal/plastic licence plate is once piece of automobile that will remain unchanged well into the future.
