Chennai To Bengaluru Electric Bus Catches Fire – Passengers Escape Unhurt
Electric buses have been touted as the future of public transportation in India. Moreover, Indian bus manufacturers are investing heavily in developing long-distance electric buses that will suit Indian conditions.
While a few Indian bus operators have started to understand the benefits of electric buses, a recent incident near Chennai involving an electric bus is likely to have an impact on the acceptance of electric buses by private operators.

Speaking about the incident, an electric bus catches fire on its way to Bengaluru from Chennai on Friday morning. Thankfully, 10 passengers onboard the electric bus escaped without any type of injuries.
Looking into the details of the incident, the electric bus travelling to Bengaluru from Chennai picked up its passengers from Koyambedu. However, when the electric bus neared Queensland Amusement Park at Chembarambakkam, the bus driver applied brakes to avoid hitting a motorcyclist.

Though the electric bus driver managed to avoid hitting the motorcyclist, a private bus hit the electric bus from the rear. According to a senior fire brigade officer, the battery circuit of the electric bus was placed in the rear, smoke started to emerge after the accident.
Soon passengers alerted the bus driver regarding the smoke, and the bus operator immediately stopped the bus and asked passengers to get down. Moreover, onlookers sourced water from a private tanker and tried to douse the fire, which apparently could not yield the desired result and fire started to spread.
That being said, in the panic of fire, most passengers onboard the electric bus left their personal belongings on the bus itself. As a result, these personal belongings were destroyed in the fire. Also, Kancheepuram Police is now carrying out an inquiry regarding the incident.
Thoughts About Electric Bus Catching Fire
Electric propulsion technologies are widely regarded as the future of transportation. Moreover, after the success of electric government buses in India, many private players are warming up to the idea of operating electric buses.
As such, the recent accident involving an electric bus catching fire will cause a lot of concern among private bus operators in India. This is likely to slow down the electrification of public transport services.
