E85 Fuel To Cost Less Than Petrol In India: Government Pushes Flex-Fuel Adoption
Flex-fuel vehicle owners could soon benefit from significantly lower running costs, as Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has confirmed that E85 fuel will be cheaper than regular petrol.
E85 Fuel To Be Cheaper Than Petrol
Ethanol blending is one of the Indian government's key initiatives to reduce crude oil imports and promote the use of locally produced alternative fuels. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has already issued guidelines and notifications to automobile manufacturers regarding higher ethanol blending targets in the future.
Recently, Hero MotoCorp launched the E85-compatible Hero Splendor Plus and HF Deluxe motorcycles, marking a major milestone in India's flex-fuel mobility journey. According to Hero MotoCorp, one out of every three motorcycles sold in the country is either a Splendor Plus or an HF Deluxe.

As a result, the company has introduced flex-fuel technology in these mass-market motorcycles, with plans to gradually make its entire product lineup compatible with flex-fuel technology over the coming years.
Lower fuel prices could make flex-fuel vehicles a more attractive alternative to conventional petrol-powered models. Ethanol production in India is largely supported by agricultural feedstocks and has already delivered significant economic benefits.
Government Plans To Boost Flex-Fuel Adoption
Speaking about E85, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said, "E85 fuel will be used for vehicles compliant with E85. It will be substantially cheaper than normal fuel." The government is also working on policies and incentives aimed at making E85-compatible vehicles more affordable and attractive to consumers.

According to government estimates, ethanol blending has helped save more than 1 lakh crore in foreign exchange while enabling farmers to earn more than 1 lakh crore through ethanol production. Greater adoption of ethanol-blended fuels could further reduce India's dependence on imported crude oil while strengthening domestic energy security.
Multiple Fuel Choices Coming To Fuel Stations
Mass-market manufacturers such as Maruti Suzuki and Hero MotoCorp have already developed flex-fuel vehicles capable of operating on higher ethanol blends. In the coming years, consumers could see multiple categories of petrol being offered at fuel stations.
The government has already directed oil marketing companies to develop infrastructure capable of dispensing fuel with varying levels of ethanol blending through dedicated fuel pumps. With cheaper E85 fuel, expanding infrastructure, and growing manufacturer support, flex-fuel vehicles could become a major pillar of India's future mobility strategy.
India's future mobility ecosystem is expected to be driven by a mix of electric vehicles, hybrids, biofuels, and renewable energy solutions, with a strong focus on reducing import dependence and increasing the use of locally sourced energy.
