E5 Series Shinkansen, Japan's Fastest Train
The E5 Series Shinkansen are the current generation bullet trains used by the East Japan Railway Company (JR East). These trains have been in operation since March 2011 and run between Tokyo and Aomori, in Aomori Prefecture.
The East Japan Railway Company runs a fleet of 59 E5 Series trains, each of which contain 10 carriages. The E5 Series is based on an earlier experimental high speed train, Fastech 360.

The E5 Series is capable of reaching a top speed of 400km/h. However, to maintain passenger comfort and to reduce environmental impact the top speed is limited to 320 km/h.

The distinctive feature of any bullet train is its nose. The E5 Series has a 15 meter long nose. The nose is meant to prevent "tunnel boom", a loud noise caused due to uneven air pressure when the a train enters the tunnel.

The carriages are covered with a "noise cover" to reduce noise produced due to high speed air passing over the carriages. In addition, sound absorbing materials underneath the carriages absorb mechanical noise.

E5 Series also uses a single pantograph instead of the usual two, reducing noise level further.

Full active suspension (FSA) and Body Tilting System are two features that aid in reducing vibrations that are generated owing to the high speeds. Body Tilting System enables the train to enter and leave a turn without slowing down too much.

These 10 carriage bullet trains are divided into three classes - GranClass, green class and ordinary class. Capacity in each class is 18, 55 and 658 respectively.
