Double-decker buses will now run for longer trips across India. The Transport Ministry has officially approved the service of double-deckers with a capacity of around 80 passengers.
The ministry has put forward over 70 routes, ranging between cities and even states.

The ministry states that the new double-decker buses will have two service doors on the lower deck and two emergency exits for both upper and lower decks.
Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport & Highways, commented, "Double decker buses with high quality service and comfort can reduce the number of cars plying between cities in a big way. This is catching up in cities across the globe. If people get assured and good service, why will they take out their cars for long drive?"
Bus operators are yet to order builders to produce such a body design, but they believe that there will be a huge business potential to this, as these buses cover routes over 500 kilometers.

Double-decker
services
have
been
in
India,
right
from
the
1930s.
Though
they
were
in
limited
numbers,
they
were
a
part
of
the
‘Indian
nostalgia' for
many.
Because
of
their
body
shape,
these
buses
tended
to
be
a
bit
on
the
unsafe
side.
But
since
they
are
now
going
to
be
more
common,
we
can
expect
better
chassis
and
body
designs.
