As strange as the incident sounds, that is exactly what happened. A man threw a cigarette butt out the window of his moving car, and the wind actually blew the burning cigarette end back in, which set the car on fire.
The incident took place in Bury, on the M66. The car in question was a silver Ford Focus and the incident took place around 8 p.m. yesterday.
The Ford Focus had a lot of things at the rear, like clothing an the still-lit cigarette butt started the fire in no time. Despite the best efforts put by the fire fighters, the car could not be saved, but the driver was unhurt.
Peter Fletcher, the Watch Commander of Bury Fire Station, said: "A discarded cigarette thrown out of the window had blown back in. He didn't realise it had blown in. He had lots of possessions in the back, like clothing, and the cigarette end set fire to them."
