Difference In Sound Between 2013 F1 Cars & 2015 F1 Cars

By Ganesh

A new era of Formula 1 began last weekend when a new breed of highly advanced cars powered not just by petrol engines, but by power units took to the tarmac. The power units combine turbo power, electricity stored in power cells running motors, which turns the wheels as well as collect energy back from the wheels.

The new engines which are part of the power system are smaller and hence more fuel efficient. Nevertheless, they are vastly more powerful. All this makes Formula 1 more efficient, more relevant to development of production cars.

So, in short, F1 is better than it has ever been. But that's not entirely the case. There can never be gains without sacrifices. In case of Formula 1, the efficient and powerful engines come at the cost of a car that sounds nothing like the glorious and deafening noise of the naturally aspirated V8 from previous seasons.

What you get instead is a V6 that's vastly muted by the turbo. In comparison, the 2014 F1 cars sound like a whimper, which is accompanied with a distinct spooling sound of the turbo and even the eerie and silent electronic sound we are used to hearing in electric cars.

Those who watched the Albert Park race last weekend will know what I am talking about. In any case, to get an idea of the stark contrast in engine noise between last year's and this year's F1 cars watch the video below.

You'll be surprised and saddened. But hey! This is a sacrifice for a good cause and something we can live with.
