Compared to cars that achieve 10 to 20 km/l of petrol, trains consume more due to their weight and number of coaches. More coaches mean higher traction power is needed, leading to increased fuel consumption and reduced mileage.
Passenger trains often stop at more stations than express or superfast trains. Each stop and start requires additional pressure, consuming more fuel. Consequently, passenger trains have lower mileage compared to other types.
Diesel-powered passenger trains are expensive for Indian Railways. Fortunately, there aren't many in operation today. Indian Railways is rapidly transitioning towards full electrification and aims to achieve this soon.
