Delhi-Dehradun Expressway To Be Completed In 3 Months, Reducing Travel Time
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced that the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway will be completed within 3 months. This new expressway is set to significantly reduce travel time between Delhi and Dehradun, cutting it down to just over two hours. Currently, the expressway is partially operational, with full public access expected by February next year.
The expressway's construction has faced several delays, with the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) missing previous deadlines. The latest completion target is now set for February 2025. A significant portion of the 210-km expressway is already in use, starting from Akshardham Temple in Delhi and passing through Baghpat, Shamli, and Saharanpur before reaching Dehradun.

Delhi-Dehradun Expressway: Key Features
The first phase of this greenfield access-controlled expressway connects Akshardham Temple to Baghpat over a 32-km stretch and is already open. The second phase, spanning approximately 118 kms between Baghpat and Saharanpur, is the longest section and partially operational. The third phase links Saharanpur to Ganeshpur via a 40-km route.
The final phase remains under construction and includes a 20-km stretch between Rajaji National Park and Dehradun. This section features Asia's largest elevated wildlife corridor at 12 kms long and a 340-metre Daat Kali tunnel. These additions aim to protect wildlife while facilitating smooth travel.

Toll Rates & Infrastructure
A closed toll system will be implemented on the new expressway, charging users only for the distance travelled. Although toll rates have not been officially announced by NHAI, reports suggest that the initial 18-km stretch from Akshardham Temple to Loni will be toll-free.
Once completed, the six-lane expressway will allow vehicles to travel at speeds up to 100 kmph. It will feature more than 110 underpasses, five rail overbridges, four major bridges, and sixteen entry and exit points. This infrastructure aims to ensure smooth traffic flow along the route.

Project Background
Nitin Gadkari laid the foundation stone for this project on February 26, 2021. Developed by NHAI at an estimated cost of ₹18,000 crore, the expressway will shorten the distance between Delhi and Dehradun by about 25 kms. Travel time will decrease from around five hours to just over two hours once fully operational.
This ambitious project promises enhanced connectivity between these two cities while offering a faster and more efficient travel experience for commuters.
