CAQM Enforces Drastic Restrictions To Clear Delhi's Toxic Air

The capital city of India, Delhi, yet again grappling with a pressing environmental problem that has become an all-too-familiar headline: severe air pollution. The city's struggle with smog and deteriorating air quality has reached a level compelling the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to take stringent action once more.

In a decisive move to combat the alarming pollution levels, the CAQM has reinstated Stage III restrictions of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), which includes a ban on the circulation of older vehicles.

Ban on Older Vehicles to Combat Pollution

In a sweeping regulation aimed at curbing the city's air pollution crisis, the plying of BS3 petrol and BS4 diesel vehicles within the Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR) is now prohibited. This drastic measure is not limited to Delhi alone but extends to other neighbouring cities as well.

The recent spike in pollution levels has been attributed to a combination of adverse weather conditions, including a persistent cold wave that has led to lower temperatures and reduced wind speeds, effectively trapping pollutants and exacerbating the city's air quality.

Emergency Measures to Tackle Sudden Pollution Spike

The CAQM sub-committee, responsible for the operationalization of GRAP, convened an emergency meeting as a direct response to the sudden degradation of air quality observed from Saturday evening. The committee's proactive stance resulted in the implementation of an eight-point action plan throughout the entire NCR.

These restrictions are not new to the region; this winter alone has seen similar measures enforced on two prior occasions, each time banning the movement of heavily loaded trucks and light motor vehicles that conform to the older BS3 and BS4 emission standards.

Chilly Woes: Cold Wave and Dense Fog

Alongside battling severe air pollution, Delhiites are also facing an intense cold wave, with temperatures plummeting to a chilling 3.5 degrees Celsius. Further complicating the situation is the dense fog that has enveloped the region, hindering visibility and affecting vehicular movement.

Thoughts About Air Pollution In Delhi

As Delhi-NCR confronts yet another environmental crisis, the reimplementation of GRAP Stage III restrictions demonstrates the seriousness of the situation. While measures such as banning older vehicles are indeed disruptive, they are deemed essential to restore air quality and protect public health.

These actions reflect the city's commitment to battling air pollution, emphasizing the need for both long-term solutions and immediate interventions to combat the recurring smog episodes and foster a cleaner, safer environment for all residents.
