Chennai Metro Rail Expansion Plans Announced in 2025-2026 Budget to Enhance Travel Comfort

Chennai's Metro Rail service is gaining popularity among residents for its luxurious and comfortable travel experience. The Tamil Nadu government is keen on expanding this service, as highlighted in the 2025-2026 budget announcement. This budget includes numerous vehicle-related projects, with a significant focus on the Metro Rail expansion.

The Tamil Nadu Finance Minister, Thangam Tennarasu, has drawn attention to the Poonamallee-Porur Metro Rail project, a key expectation for Chennai's people. He announced that this route will be operational by December. Additionally, the budget outlines plans to extend the Metro Rail service to more areas, including from the airport to Kilambakkam.

Chennai Metro Rail Expansion Plans for 2025-2026

The expansion of the Metro Rail network is set to cost Rs. 9,335 crore. The government also plans to extend services from Koyambedu to Pattabiram and from Poonamallee to Sriperumbudur. The Koyambedu-Pattabiram route will have a budget of Rs. 9,744 crore, while the Poonamallee-Sriperumbudur route will be developed with Rs. 8,779 crore.

The announcement of the Porur-Poonamallee Metro Rail service starting in December has been well-received. This development is eagerly awaited by residents in the area, which has been congested due to ongoing construction works. The completion of these works is expected to bring relief and joy to many.

Chennai Metro Rail Expansion Plans for 2025-2026

The Phase 2 Metro Rail project is being developed with a budget of approximately Rs. 63,246 crore. This project includes a 118.9 km route covering Madhavaram-Sipcot, Lighthouse-Poonamallee, Madhavaram-Sholinganallur, and Poonamallee-Porur. New driverless trains are expected to operate on these routes.

These trains will feature three coaches and are designed to run at speeds between 80 km/h and 90 km/h. For passenger safety and convenience, they will include CCTV cameras inside and outside, mobile phone charging ports, handrails, and displays showing routes and upcoming stops.

Enhanced Passenger Experience

To further enhance passenger comfort, 'Perch' type seats will be available for those standing. The new Metro Rail trains are anticipated to be well-received by Chennai residents due to these features.

The Porur-Poonamallee route's upcoming operation is a significant expectation for Chennai residents. With confirmation from the Tamil Nadu Finance Minister that it will be operational by December, this new route is set to commence by year's end.
