Trial operations for the Chennai Metro Rail's 9.1 km stretch between Poonamallee and Porur are set to commence. This segment will feature driverless metro coaches, marking a significant step in the city's transit development. The metro rail services in Chennai currently operate on two routes. The new line from Poonamallee to Porur is part of the Phase 2 expansion, with a budget of Rs 63,246 crore. This project aims to introduce fully automated, driverless trains on this route, enhancing efficiency and safety.
Initial trial runs began last March, covering a 3 km stretch from Poonamallee to Mullatha garden. During these tests, a minor issue with the overhead wire was identified and resolved. The trial was deemed successful after this correction. Now, trials will extend over 9.1 km from Poonamallee to Porur.
Testing will commence at a speed of 15 km/hr, gradually increasing to 35-40 km/hr, and finally reaching 80 km/hr. Two metro trains are currently involved in these trials, with plans to add two more soon. This phased approach ensures comprehensive testing of all operational parameters.
The trial runs will assess several critical factors such as train acceleration, braking efficiency, air conditioning performance inside the coaches, and the design and installation of the rail track. These elements are crucial for ensuring reliable service once the metro becomes operational.
Additionally, the tests will focus on vibrations during travel, noise levels, especially at high speeds, and train performance on curves. These evaluations aim to prevent accidents and ensure passenger safety when the service begins.
Future Plans and Safety Measures
The second rail track is anticipated to be ready for testing by June. This expansion is part of a broader effort to enhance public transportation in Chennai through advanced technology and infrastructure improvements.
