Chennai Removes Over 3,000 Abandoned Vehicles To Boost Urban Development
In Chennai, civic officials are actively removing old vehicles parked on roadsides under municipal jurisdiction. Recently, over 3,000 abandoned vehicles have been cleared. The municipality is now working on auctioning these vehicles.
The Chennai municipality has sought assistance from the city police to verify if the seized vehicles are linked to any criminal cases. If no criminal background is found, the municipality will proceed with auctioning them. This initiative aims to clear the streets and generate revenue for city development.
Efforts to remove abandoned vehicles in Chennai have been ongoing for several years. The initiative began in 2018 during a severe dengue outbreak when stagnant water in old vehicles became breeding grounds for mosquitoes. This led to the removal of over 5,000 vehicles at that time.
Old vehicles parked on roadsides significantly impact traffic flow and become breeding grounds for disease-carrying insects like mosquitoes due to rainwater stagnation. The municipality's efforts aim to prevent these issues and improve urban living conditions.
Currently, around 3,000 vehicles have been identified and removed. Officials are working to obtain clearance for these vehicles. Once cleared, they will be auctioned, with the revenue used for city development projects such as installing CCTV cameras in various parts of Chennai.
Nationwide Efforts
Similar efforts are being made nationwide to encourage owners of old vehicles to voluntarily scrap them. Old vehicle operation is a significant cause of air pollution. Both central and state governments are working to phase out old petrol and diesel vehicles to reduce pollution levels.
Karthikeyan, who was the Municipal Commissioner during the initial phase of this initiative, took steps to auction the previously removed vehicles. Now, with the resurgence of abandoned vehicles on urban roadsides, municipal employees are once again removing them.
The revenue generated from the auction of these over 3,000 old vehicles will be used for various developmental works in the city. This includes installing CCTV cameras in different areas to enhance security and monitoring.
