Chennai Central: Home To India's Longest Railway Station Name
India's railway network, the fourth largest globally, covers approximately 114,500 kilometres and includes 7,500-8,000 stations. Among these numerous stations, Chennai Central Railway Station holds the distinction of having the longest name in India. This article delves into why this station boasts such a lengthy name.
The Southern Railway recently shared some intriguing facts about the Puratchi Thalaivar Dr M.G. Ramachandran Central Railway Station on their official X platform page. They stated, "Did you know that Chennai Central Railway Station has the longest name among all Indian railway stations?"
Initially named Madras Central, it was later renamed as Chennai Central. In 2019, the central government accepted the Tamil Nadu AIADMK government's recommendation and renamed it again to honour the former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran.
Before this renaming, Venkatnarasimharajuvaripeta Railway Station in Andhra Pradesh held the title of the longest name. However, Chennai's Puratchi Thalaivar Dr M.G. Ramachandran Central Railway Station took over this title in 2019. Despite its extended name, locals affectionately refer to it as Chennai Central.
This station connects Chennai to various parts of North India, including Kolkata, Mumbai, and Delhi, as well as other areas throughout the country. It holds the NSG-1 category status under the Chennai Division of the Southern Railway Zone and acts as the city's primary terminal.
Interestingly, while Chennai Central boasts the longest railway station name in India, it lost its global title in 2019 to the Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwlllantysiliogogogoch station in Wales, England. This Welsh station's name consists of 58 letters and is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the location with the longest name in England.
In terms of size and platforms, Howrah Junction in West Bengal is India's largest railway station. Established in 1854, it features an extensive network with 23 platforms and 26 tracks. It handles a high volume of trains.
Renaming For Cultural Significance
The renaming of Madras Central to honour the former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran reflects a significant cultural shift while preserving its historical significance. This station serves as a crucial hub for handling trains for passengers across India.
