Chandigarh To Phase Out Fuel Based Two Wheeler And Four Wheeler Registrations - All You Need To Know
India is taking significant strides toward promoting the adoption of electric vehicles as part of its commitment to sustainable and environmentally-friendly transportation. The government has introduced various initiatives, policies, and incentives to make electric mobility more accessible and attractive to the masses.
The Chandigarh administration has taken a step further to push the adoption of electric vehicles in the union territory. The administration has announced its plans to stop registering fuel-based two-wheelers by July and four-wheelers from December 2023.

According to the administration, the permitted number of internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles under its electric vehicle policy will be met in these timelines for FY2023-24. Chandigarh introduced EV Policy in September 2022, which will stay around for five years.
Chandigarh has set a goal to switch to EVs in the upcoming years gradually. With the implementation of these policies, they are motivating people to choose EVs instead of traditional ICE vehicles. According to the EV policy, only 6,201 ICE two-wheelers can be registered in a financial year.
Once the limit is exceeded, only EVs will be allowed to get registered in the city. The Chandigarh administration's data shows that about 4,032 ICE two-wheelers have registered since April 1, 2023.
This means that only limited slots are available for registering ICE two-wheelers, with around 2,170 slots remaining. These are likely to be filled up by July. The data shows that only 257 electric two-wheelers have been registered so far during this financial year.
The EV policy also puts a cap on the ICE car registration, allowing only 22,626 units in a financial year. This limit is projected to be reached by December, and the Chandigarh administration expects to register around 35 per cent of electric cars out of the total registration.
And this will be increased to 70 per cent in the 2023-24 fiscal for electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers. Meanwhile, registration of electric cars rose from 10 per cent last fiscal to 20 per cent this year.
In the third, fourth, and fifth year of the EV Policy 2022, the city administration plans to register 100 per cent of e-two-wheelers and three-wheelers, while registration of electric cars for personal use will gradually increase to 50 per cent by the fifth year.
The city administration intends to register 100 per cent electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers by the third, fourth, and fifth year of the EV Policy 2022. Whereas the registration of electric cars is expected to rise to 50 per cent by the fifth year gradually.
Thoughts About Chandigarh's EV Policy
Chandigarh, which has the highest vehicle density in India, has taken a significant step by becoming the first Indian city to announce a ban on new ICE vehicle registrations. However, there has yet to be clarity on how the administration plans to address the existing ICE vehicle ecosystem.
