In Karnataka, police have introduced cardboard dummies resembling officers and patrol vehicles at strategic locations. These dummies are designed to look like real police personnel from a distance, discouraging traffic violations. This method has been used in countries like Japan for years.
The Karnataka police have placed these dummies on select roads to enhance roadside monitoring. While surveillance cameras are helpful, they cannot replace the presence of police patrols. Deploying officers everywhere is impractical, making these dummies a viable alternative.
A video on Sudhakar's Instagram page highlights these dummies on Karnataka highways. It features a police dummy alongside a Toyota Innova car dummy, which is slightly smaller than the actual vehicle. The car dummy includes working siren lights to add realism.
To make the dummies more convincing, they are equipped with real siren lights. This video was captured on a highway in Karnataka, but similar setups can be found on major roads in Bengaluru. The aim is to create an illusion of active policing to deter traffic violations.
Bengaluru traffic police wear distinctive hats during duty, which are also featured on the dummies. Some even sport sunglasses and face masks to enhance their authenticity. These additions serve one purpose: reducing traffic infractions.
Potential Challenges and Observations
While this tactic has been successful in some regions globally, it has failed elsewhere as regular drivers quickly identify them as fakes. Whether this strategy will be effective in Karnataka remains uncertain.
The initiative reflects efforts to curb traffic violations through innovative means. However, its success depends on drivers' perceptions and adherence to traffic rules when confronted with these dummies.
