CAQM To Launch GRAP-III To Combat Air Quality Crisis In Delhi NCR: How It Will Affect Vehicle Users

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) is set to implement the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP-II) in Delhi NCR. This initiative, starting on October 22, 2024, at 8:00 AM, aims to combat the deteriorating air quality in the region. The plan seeks to prevent further decline in air quality levels.

Delhi's air quality has reached concerning levels, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at an average of 310, placing it in the 'very poor' category. This alarming statistic highlights the urgent need for intervention to address pollution issues effectively.

Understanding GRAP-II

GRAP-II is activated when air quality falls into the "very poor" category. It outlines specific measures that various agencies must undertake to mitigate pollution. These actions are supplementary to those already enforced under Stage-I of the plan.

The government has announced several measures under GRAP-II for Delhi NCR. These include increasing CNG and electric bus frequency, regular road cleaning, and sprinkling water on roads. Traffic police will also work to prevent traffic jams as part of efforts to control pollution.

Exploring GRAP-III

Stage-III of GRAP targets 'Severe' air quality conditions, with AQI ranging from 401 to 450. This stage involves increasing mechanised road sweeping frequency and ensuring daily water sprinkling with dust suppressants before peak traffic hours. It also focuses on enhancing public transport services with differential rates for off-peak travel and regulating construction activities.

Both GRAP-II and GRAP-III may impact vehicle owners due to potential restrictions on vehicle use and increased public transport services. Vehicle owners will need to adapt to changes in traffic rules aimed at improving air quality.

The implementation of these plans reflects a concerted effort by authorities to address air pollution challenges in Delhi NCR. By taking proactive steps, they aim to safeguard public health and improve environmental conditions in the region.
