Road To Roast: BMW Transforms The R 18’s Heart Into An Insane Espresso Machine
BMW Motorrad has swapped open roads for open roasts, collaborating with ECM Manufacture GmbH to reveal the Big Coffee Boxer - an espresso machine built around the 1,802cc twin-cylinder engine from its heavyweight cruiser, the R 18.
The Big Coffee Boxer looks to be the high-octane caffeine fix for the discerning BMW cruiser fan, and with only 80 units planned, it's as rare as a limited-run superbike.

Visually, this repurposed coffee machine is unmistakably R 18 - the boxer engine is polished to perfection, its cooling fins gleaming, cylinder heads proudly on display. The engine sits on a custom stand like it's ready to roll, but instead of exhaust pipes, you get a floating drip tray that catches crema instead of carbon.
Under the hood - or rather, under the portafilter - the machine is as serious as any barista's pride and joy. Built with ECM Manufacture, it uses the coffe machine maker's E61 brew group, revered since 1961 for rock-steady temperature stability.

The Big Coffee Boxer's dual boilers mean you can brew and steam at the same time - no waiting for your "engine" to warm back up between tasks, making it perfect for those needing their early morning fix of joe.
The rotary pump runs smooth and quietly, pressure gauges keep you in the sweet spot, and you can choose between three brew temperatures to fine-tune the flavour. There's even a shot timer so you can hit the perfect extraction window, like nailing a perfect gear shift.

Priced at €7,900 (about Rs 7.99 lakh), it's not exactly a budget appliance - but compared to a brand-new R 18, it's like riding away with just the engine and leaving the frame behind. And since it doesn't need fuel, tyres, or oil changes, your maintenance schedule will mostly involve coffee beans.
DriveSpark Thinks
BMW's Big Coffee Boxer proves that whether it's the road or the proper espresso roast, the right engine makes all the difference. The Big Coffee Boxer is surely the right espresso brewer for the discerning BMW cruiser fanatic.
Between the limited numbers, the craftsmanship, and the sheer spectacle of brewing espresso from the shell of a road-ready boxer engine, we expect it to sell out rather quickly.
