The Titan Is What Happens When BMW's Designers & Engineers Get Bored - NOx Powered Sprinter
German motorcycle manufacturer BMW Motorrad recently took the covers off the R 1300 R, bringing a host of upgrades that made the boxer-engine-powered sports tourer motorcycle an even more enjoyable ride than before.
And while those with the big enough pockets to actually afford it put down their orders, a group of BMW employees decided to have a bit of fun and transformed the sports tourer into the R 1300 R "Titan", a nitrous-oxide fueled sprint racer that looks like it is going fast just standing still.

BMW's R 1300 R "Titan" one-off concept, created by BMW Motorrad designers and engineers as a passion project, features an aggressive stance, monocoque fairing and even a nitrous-oxide system.
The Titan's design takes the stock R 1300 R's lines and pushes them to racing extremes. Its front end is slammed low while the rear is jacked up, giving the bike a crouched, "predatory cat" silhouette when at rest.

A full carbon-fiber fairing replaces the standard bodywork, and an exaggerated air-intake panel continues the aggressive styling cues of BMW's new R roadster. Bold graphics and bright metallic-blue accents add to the theatrical look as do the extended tail section, thick forged wheels, and minimal lighting.
Under the Titan's bodywork lies the familiar 1,300 cc boxer-twin engine from the standard R 1300 R. In factory trim, this flat-twin already makes about 145 hp at 7,750 rpm and 149 Nm of torque (a healthy bump over the prior model's 136 hp).

For the Titan, BMW retained the stock engine but placed it in a special Wilbers swingarm chassis with a long, rigid arm to put all that power to the ground. The BMW skunkworks team also worked with Akrapovič to build a custom titanium exhaust: the twin headers merge under the engine and then split into dual outlets that exit beneath the high rear tail, giving it a snarling boxer exhaust note.
Perhaps the most dramatic feature is the Titan's nitrous-oxide system. Nestled between the titanium rear silencers is a NOS bottle - a feature unheard of on production BMW bikes. At the push of a button, it injects nitrous oxide into the engine for an instant boost in horsepower.

BMW hasn't released figures, but the engineers say the nitrous surge "catapults" the bike forward by forcing extra oxygen into the combustion - exactly the kind of wild trick a sprint-racing special deserves.
To ensure that the Titan doesn't catapult itself off the race track, the BMW team gave it a set of race-bred brakes, with the Magura HC3 brake lever recapturing the released energy after the finish line, decelerating the bike to a stop.

For now, the R 1300 R Titan exists purely as a showpiece. BMW has not announced any plans to produce the Titan beyond this prototype, nor disclosed the project's cost.
DriveSpark Thinks!
The Titan, however, remains BMW Motorrad's passion project, showcasing what their designers and engineers can do when they give free rein to racing performance and custom design. It's a brutally fun reminder that even a factory roadster can be transformed into a full-bore track weapon with the right vision and a bottle of nitrous
