Beemer, Bimmer, Beamer…And Bao Ma? - The History of BMW’s Aliases
You might be confused after reading the title and it may raise a question, what's Bao Ma? However, when the words Bimmer, Beemer or Beamer are heard, we are quite sure of our answer, that it is a BMW. What kind of vehicle, though?
Continue reading to learn more about these names and how and why they came into use. And, yes, I will be talking about the Bao Ma fandom as well!

BMW has had a tremendous impact on the world of machines, automobiles, and us petrolheads. A company that's over 110 years old - Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH, or BMW, started in 1916 with the production of airplane motors and following that, in 1923, made the shift to motorcycle engines. They have history written all over them.
'Beemer' - The Roots
The first of the lot to emerge was 'Beemer' in Great Britain around the late 1930s. BMW got that term from their fans, to differentiate them from other makes after their quick success in the motorsport industry.

Going up against Beemers were the already quite successful, 'Beezers', another name for the traditional British Classic racing bikes: BSA. The BSA's were more commonly seen on the race track and only slowly did the world see the emergence of the Beemers. Over time, the spelling of the word 'Beemer' changed, and was then also known as 'Beamers'.
Decades after the Second World War and BMW starting its production again, we head a little more to the West of Europe, to a land known as The United States of America. Around the 1970s, BMW started blossoming in the USA and the company was reaching new highs. Initially, unsurprisingly, the Americans copied the term 'Beamer' and used that word to refer to the BMW automobiles.

'Bimmer' and 'Bimmer'
The Boston Chapter BMW Club (also known as BMW CCA) released their own newsletter - 'Bimmer'. This was the first use of the term. Still, however, the word did not stick with the public and only very few used to refer to the 4-wheeled vehicles of BMW as that.
Soon after the newsletter was released, another company launched 'Bimmer' - a magazine from a completely different company with the same title as BMW CCA's newsletter. Oh, Americans with their creativity, I tell you!

Credit is due where credit is deserved, though. After the launch of the magazine, 'Bimmer' stuck with the general public as the nickname for their automobiles, not only in the USA but also in Germany, the birthplace of BMW.
The Precious Horse - 'Bao Ma'
Coming to the long-awaited and not-so-heard-of nickname of BMW, Bao Ma. This word originates from East Asia having its roots in China. When translated literally, Bao Ma means a Precious Horse.

Horses, in China, are revered as holy beings that hold great value and have an upper hand over their competitors making it quite an apt fit for BMW. Moreover, horses, nowadays, are not seen as a form of transport but as royalty and wealth - giving us another anecdote to BMW's luxury!
In My Opinion
Being a company that is over a century old, BMW comes with a great deal of history tied to them. A massive chunk of BMW's life has been involved in motorsports with enormous success in the 4-wheeler and 2-wheeler categories. This gives them a strong set of expectations to live up to, and my, oh my, they do not disappoint!

BMW, in spite of having to endure the pressure of delivering quality, is regarded as one of the finest automobile companies in the market globally, in the luxury segment. Not only classy, but Bimmers also have performance closely knit to them giving the customers a small sense of their racing past when put behind the wheel.
When we talk about the various personalities of BMW, I previously have never heard of the term Bao Ma. Whereas, Bimmer, Beemer and Beamer are what we generally hear being thrown around on a day-to-day basis.

Personally, I find it quite interesting how the fanatics have not just kept the nickname to English or German (that being BMW's local language), but to their own respective regional languages. This shows the impact the BMW culture has had on its enthusiasts!
Some people call it a way of life, and BMW calls it 'Sheer Driving Pleasure' - either way, whichever one I choose to follow, I know I won't be wrong!
