BMW M5 Registers Record Breaking 82 km Long Drift
On February 15th this year, a Chevrolet Camaro SS driven by drift car racer Abdo ‘Dado' Feghali set a new Guinness World Record for the longest sustained vehicle drift. The drift, attempted at the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi, lasted 10 minutes and covered 11.18 km.
If you are a fan of the Fast and Furious movie series you'll know how difficult drifting a car is, even for short periods of time. So imagine how difficult it must have been to keep it up for 10 minutes and cover 11 km.
Now read this. The above record was annihilated on May 11 by a BMW M5, which recorded a sustained drift measuring 82 km! Learn more about this latest Guinness World Record below. You can also watch the teaser video that BMW made before the final official attempt was made.

The Guinness World Record record was set by BMW Performance Center instructor, Johan Schwartz on Saturday, May 11, 2013 in South Carolina, USA.

Schwartz completed 322.5 laps of the 841-foot (circumference) Performance Center skid pad, covering a total distance of 51.278 miles or 82.506 km.

Amazingly, the machine used to set the record was a regular 2013 BMW M5 production model, which had no modifications done to it.

The BMW M5 uses a M-DCT transmission and is powered by a twin turbocharged 4.4 liter V8 engine rated at 560 HP and 501 ft-lb of torque.

The performance sedan was fitted with Continental ContiSport ultra-high performance tires (sizes 255/30/20 front, 295/30/20 rear).

The drift attempt was part of a BMW event. The record attempt alone managed to raise $20,000 in charitable donations benefitting The BMW Charity Pro-Am, which benefits more than 150 different charities.

"Thanks for all the congrats and support. What a day!" Johan Schwartz posted on his Facebook page.
"I am proud of yesterday for many reasons. Obviously for the new Guinness Book of World Record Drift, 51.278 miles (82.506 kilometers), but more importantly for the friends and sponsors who were able to make it, giving hot lap rides after the record drift and all the money that was raised for the BMW Charity Pro Am. This would not have been possible without the support of the BMW Performance Center and crew!
