BJP Challenges Chennai Formula 4 Event In Court: All Details Here
Tamil Nadu BJP state spokesperson A. N. S. Prasad has approached the Madras High Court to halt the Formula 4 car racing event in Chennai, scheduled for August 31 and September 1. The petitioner sought an urgent hearing on Tuesday, but the case will be heard on August 28.
The BJP leader argued that the Formula 4 car racing would cause road blockades, inconveniencing the public. He also alleged that illegal road works were being carried out, affecting daily commuters and patients visiting Chennai General Hospital and Chennai Multispecialty Hospital.

Opposition from AIADMK
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi Palaniswami (EPS) criticised the DMK government for misusing public funds. He stated, "There are so many problems that people are facing today, and in such a scenario this DMK government is conducting a car race." EPS highlighted that the race would disrupt transport as it cuts through a 3.5 km circuit around Island Grounds near Marina beach.
The opposition leader also pointed out that the circuit's proximity to hospitals would severely affect transportation in the city. He emphasised that public funds should be used for people's benefit rather than entertainment under the guise of a sporting event.
Government's Stand
Tamil Nadu Youth Welfare and Sports Development Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin assured that the Formula 4-night street race would not hinder commuters. Speaking to media persons earlier, he mentioned arrangements for 8,000 spectators to watch the race. The minister added that people could watch a free session on Saturday morning.
The DMK government has allocated around Rs 30 crore for this event. Eight teams will compete on a track featuring 19 turns, multiple chicanes, and tricky elevations. The state government also stated they have an agreement with private organisers to share revenue generated from the event, similar to the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The petitioner seeks to stop the car racing event due to its "illegal nature" and its impact on public convenience. Despite assurances from Udhayanidhi Stalin about minimal disruption, concerns remain about road blockades and illegal road works affecting daily life in Chennai.
The court's decision on August 28 will determine whether the event proceeds as planned or faces cancellation due to these legal challenges.
