Bharat NCAP Launched – Manufacturers Already Volunteered Multiple Models
The union minister of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari launched the Bharat New Car Assessment Program (Bharat-NCAP/B-NCAP) today. This is widely regarded as a major step for India in terms of improving the safety of cars manufactured and sold in the country.
According to the government, Bharat NCAP will be implemented from October 1 and it is expected to significantly improve the safety standards of motor vehicles by up to 3.5 tonnes.

However, at present, electric vehicles will not be tested under the Bharat NCAP protocols. That being said, we expect the government to soon work on new protocols to include electric vehicles as well.
That being said, the Bharath NCAP continues to be a voluntary crash testing program and no manufacturers are forced to undergo these crash tests. However, OEMs have already volunteered 15-20 models for the Bharat NCAP evaluation.
To volunteer for the crash testing program, the manufacturer has to submit Form 70-A application to the designated government agency. After accepting the application, Bharat NCAP authorities notify the manufacturer regarding the selection of the model.
Moreover, the vehicles used for the Bharat NCAP crash test will be provided by the OEM. However, it is worth mentioning that the testing agency has the authority to pick up the model randomly from an authorised dealership.
Furthermore, 3 types of crash testing will be conducted by Bharat NCAP to assess the crashworthiness of the car. This includes Offset Deformable Barrier Frontal Impact Test, Side Impact Test, and Pole Side Impact Test.
Also, the test speed for these ratings will be set at 64km/h, which will be similar to Global NCAP. Moreover, the new Bharat NCAP safety rating will also consider the fitment of Safety Assist Technologies such as ESP and more.
Finally, Bharat NCAP will share the result of the crash test with the manufacturer of the model. This result can either be published or the manufacturer can seek a reassessment of the model.
Thoughts: Bharat NCAP is expected to encourage car manufacturers to develop safer cars for Indian consumers. Moreover, it is also expected to significantly benefit car manufacturers in India as they no longer have to undergo expensive Global NCAP crash testing protocols.
