Enhancing Safety: Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway Installs 60 Cameras To Detect Speeding
On the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway, a significant step has been taken to curb the menace of overspeeding, with the installation of 60 cameras aimed at detecting vehicles exceeding the speed limits.
This initiative, spearheaded by the Karnataka's traffic and safety wing alongside the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), is set to ensure stricter to traffic rules and enhance road safety.

The Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology, incorporated in 48 of these cameras, has been strategically placed in six locations in each direction of the expressway. The NHAI has further supported this endeavour by installing additional video cameras across three spots.
Alok Kumar, the additional director general of police (traffic, road safety, and training), elaborated on the mechanism, stating that these cameras would automatically issue challans to those found speeding by calculating the time taken to travel between two points on the expressway. If this duration is below the set permissible limits, it indicates that the vehicle was overspeeding.

The maximum speed limit on this expressway is 100 kmph, urging drivers to maintain this permissible average speed to avoid penalties. This expressway, the first of its kind in South India, has been a focal point for concerns regarding an uptick in accidents and various traffic violations, necessitating such measures.
It was also highlighted that state-run KSRTC buses have been spotted travelling in the wrong direction on this roadway. Following a spate of accidents, the NHAI convened an expert committee in July last year to inspect and bolster the safety features of the expressway.

Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March last year, the 119-km expressway, constructed with an investment of Rs. 8,408 crore, boasts of 52 km of greenfield development.
This includes five bypasses designed to alleviate traffic congestion, alongside 11 overpasses, 64 underpasses, 42 small bridges, and a six-lane main carriageway flanked by two-lane service roads on both sides.

This initiative not only aims at reducing the fatal accident rate, which saw a decrease in August but also at ensuring a safer commuting experience for motorists plying on the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway. By leveraging technology, the authorities are making strides towards achieving higher standards of road safety and discipline among drivers.
