Bengaluru Metro Yellow Line Service To Be Launched This Month: Key Details Here
After years of anticipation, Bengaluru's Yellow Line Metro is nearing completion. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has secured approval from the Railway Board for its rolling stock. This marks a significant step forward for the 19.15-km corridor linking R.V. Road to Bommasandra. The line is expected to enhance connectivity to Electronic City, Bengaluru's IT hub, with partial operations slated for June.
Trial runs on the Yellow Line commenced on March 7, 2024, using two available train sets. BMRCL is now in the final stages, awaiting regulatory inspections and preparing for phased operations. Once operational, this line will significantly improve connectivity in south Bengaluru, benefiting commuters from Electronic City, Bommasandra, and HSR Layout.

Regulatory Inspections Awaited
A senior official stated that most documentation has been submitted and signalling certification will soon be sent. This inspection is essential before any metro corridor can open to the public and will assess critical systems like tracks, stations, fire safety measures, train sets, and entry/exit points.
Following the CMRS inspection, BMRCL plans to implement any necessary modifications within two weeks. This paves the way for a mid to late June launch of services between five major stations initially. Full-scale operations will commence once all final approvals are secured.
Challenges in Train Set Deliveries
The physical infrastructure of the Yellow Line was completed months ago; however, delays in train set deliveries have hindered progress. Currently, two train sets are ready with a third expected soon. These delays were primarily due to issues with driverless coaches.
In 2019, CRRC Corporation of China won a Rs 1,578-crore contract to supply 216 metro coaches but failed to establish manufacturing in India as required. This led to significant delivery delays and forced BMRCL to consider invoking a Rs 372-crore bank guarantee.
To address these challenges, CRRC partnered with Titagarh Rail Systems in Kolkata. Although this collaboration resumed stalled deliveries, progress remained slow. Despite these setbacks, BMRCL is optimistic about launching partial operations soon.
DriveSpark Thinks
The Bengaluru Metro Yellow Line launch is expected to ease traffic congestion on key arterial roads while transforming south Bengaluru's connectivity landscape. Commuters can look forward to improved travel experiences once this long-awaited project becomes operational.
