The 23-year old thief was caught for stealing bikes in Bengaluru to pay for his girlfriend's treatment.

Bengaluru police have arrested an inter-state thief who stole over 50 two-wheelers for his girlfriend.

In a scene lifted straight out of a movie, the thief, a garment factory tailor falls in love with one of his co-worker and when falls sick, became a thief to steal over 50 bikes.

As per TOI, Manohar alias Manu from Naidu Layout in Hongasandra in Bengaluru was arrested on April 22, 2017, for stealing 51 bikes is now cooling his heels in the jail.

Manu revealed to the Bengaluru police that he needed money to pay for his sick girlfriend and bring her from Andhra Pradesh to Bengaluru and ensure her treatment.

Police said, "Manohar and his colleague wanted to marry, but the girl fell ill and returned to Andhra Pradesh in January this year. She asked Manohar to rent a house in Bengaluru and make arrangements for her treatment,"

"The girl was suffering from jaundice and hormone-related issues. A doctor told him the treatment would cost at least Rs 5 lakh. Besides, he wanted to take a new house for rent and buy household equipment. This prompted Manohar to steal two-wheelers and sell them. His girlfriend had no idea what he was doing," police said.

The cops have seized over 50 bikes worth Rs 25 lakh from Manu. Since November last year, there had been an increase in bike thefts in the city, especially in Bommanahalli and surrounding areas. Following questioning habitual offenders, the cops discovered it was the work of a new thief.

To catch the thief, the cops put up pamphlets "stating a private company was looking for used motorbikes for delivery boys. The accused contacted one of our staff who acted as a potential buyer.We caught him red-handed when he was trying to sell a stolen bike."
