Bengaluru Goes Green: 100 New Tata Electric Buses Hit the Streets

In a significant move towards sustainable urban transportation, Bengaluru witnessed a green revolution on the 26th of December when Chief Minister Siddaramaiah inaugurated the first fleet of Tata electric buses.

These 100 non-air-conditioned buses, operated by the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), marked the beginning of a larger initiative to bring eco-friendly public transport to the forefront in one of India's bustling metropolises.

Tata Electric Buses Rolling Out in Bengaluru

As the city gears up for a cleaner future, these electric buses are set to traverse the streets from eight key depots, which include Shantinagar, KR Puram, and Jayanagar, among others. Distinguished by their low-rise, dark blue exteriors, these buses stand as a testament to BMTC's commitment to curbing carbon emissions.

This deployment is part of the extensive FAME-II scheme, an ambitious project by the Central Government to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles across the nation. The agreement with Tata Motors ensures that these buses will be maintained and operated by the company for a duration of 12 years, a strategic partnership that promises efficiency and reliability in service.

Leasing Agreement and Operational Details

Under the leasing model, BMTC has agreed to a payment plan of Rs 41 per kilometer to the private operator responsible for these electric buses. This arrangement obliges the operator to maintain a minimum daily run of 200 kilometers for each bus, guaranteeing that the vehicles cover significant ground and serve a considerable number of commuters. The buses, designed for the urban environment, will have conductors from BMTC to assist passengers and ensure smooth operations.

Advanced Features of the Electric Buses

The electric buses, each 12 meters in length with a floor height of 400 mm, are built to accommodate 35 passengers and are engineered to cover 200 kilometers on a single charge. Ensuring safety and convenience, these buses are equipped with state-of-the-art features, including three cameras to aid the driver, LED destination boards, and voice announcement systems for passenger assistance.

They also come with emergency panic buttons for enhanced safety of women and are fitted with a Fire Detection and Alarm System (FDAS), highlighting BMTC's dedication to passenger security.

In addition to the deployment of the 921 electric buses under the FAME-II scheme, BMTC has ambitious plans to extend its fleet further by acquiring another 380 electric vehicles. This expansion will significantly bolster Bengaluru's green transportation network, setting an example for other cities to follow.
