Embracing The Future: Bengaluru Gets Chinese-Made Driverless Metro Trains
There's palpable excitement in the air as Bengaluru, one of India's bustling metros, gets set to embrace the future of urban transport. The eagerly anticipated driverless metro trains, destined to revolutionize travel on the Yellow Line of Bengaluru Metro, have docked at Chennai port.
These cutting-edge trains were spotlighted when images surfaced online, announcing their arrival and hinting at a new chapter in India's public transport narrative. With the implementation of autonomous trains gaining momentum nationwide, Bengaluru's 'Namma Metro' prepares to join this avant-garde league.
The metropolis of Bangalore is set to leap forward with the upcoming introduction of its first unmanned metro service. This innovative venture will see a driverless metro making its journey along the Yellow Line, stretching across the city's vibrant landscape.
Recent developments revealed that the metro train, crafted in China, completed its overseas journey, arriving from the shores of China to Chennai Port. Notwithstanding prior delays in commissioning the Yellow Line, the recent visuals from Chennai Port signal that the commencement of services might be on the horizon.
This new addition extends across a 19.15-kilometer route, encompassing crucial junctions such as Jayadeva Hospital, Silk Board Junction, and Electronics City, ensuring a seamless and efficient transit experience.
A contract marked in 2019, with a valuation of about Rs 1,578 crore, between the Bangalore Metro Rail Authority and China's CRRC Nanjing Puzhen, outlined the production of 216 metro rail coaches.
The arrival of these coaches at Chennai has ignited the next phase of their journey, yet customs formalities and transportation to Bengaluru, expected to span several days, remain ahead. Once in Bengaluru, they'll head to the Heppagodi depot for assembly and extensive testing.
The futuristic fleet, although now at the Chennai Port, is not scheduled for immediate departure to its final destination. Initial protocols such as customs clearances will keep the coaches at bay for approximately five days.
Post-clearance, a convoy of large container trucks will escort them to Bengaluru, a course lasting 3-4 days. Then, specialist engineers from China will join hands with local teams for the intricate task of testing and assembly.
Engaging in a rigorous 32-step testing procedure, these engineers ensure the trains are in prime condition before operational commencement. This phase is critical, with the successful test outcomes being submitted to the Principal Railway Safety Authority. The entire process leading to the rails humming with the sound of these driverless trains could unfold over the span of 5-6 months.
