BEML Secures Major Contract For High-Speed Train Production In India: All Details Here
Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) in Bengaluru has secured a contract worth Rs. 866.87 crore from the Chennai ICF factory. This agreement is for the production of high-speed trains in India, designed to match the speed of bullet trains. The project aims to have these trains operational by the end of 2026.
Since the Vande Bharat trains were introduced in India, they have received a positive response from travellers. Many passengers prefer these trains due to their comfort and design features, leading to a significant number of Vande Bharat trains being in service.

The new high-speed train project has been awarded to BEML because the ICF management lacks the necessary facilities and time for construction. The ICF is currently occupied with fulfilling existing orders for Vande Bharat trains, which has led them to outsource this new project.
The Vande Bharat trains were initially compared to international bullet trains in terms of design and amenities. However, their speed is not on par with bullet trains, being similar to regular train speeds. This limits their ability to significantly reduce travel time between distant cities.

BEML's contract includes designing, manufacturing, and commissioning two high-speed trains, each with eight coaches. These coaches must incorporate features found in current passenger train coaches, such as reclining and swivel seats.
The new train coaches are expected to offer a luxurious travel experience similar to air travel. They should include an infotainment system that informs passengers about the train's location, along with other requested features.

Challenges and Opportunities
Currently, air travel remains the fastest option for long-distance travel between cities due to high airline ticket prices. The railway administration aims to introduce a faster train option similar to Vande Bharat but with higher speeds.
BEML is anticipated to manufacture a train capable of reaching speeds of 250 kilometres per hour by the end of 2026. This development could position it as a strong competitor against bullet trains in other countries.
