Double Decker Train Between Bangalore & Chennai
India got its first AC double decker train service in late 2010, which ran between Howrah and Dhanbad. About three years later South India is set to get its first AC double decker train service in the form of Chennai-Bangalore Express.
The AC double decker coaches are currently only Chair Cars, unlike the other AC express services, but due to its higher passenger carrying capacity it will increase profit for the Railways. The service starts from Thursday, April 25th.

The new train service will start from Chennai Central at 7.25 am on Thursday and reach Bangalore City at 1.30pm.

The train will make its return journey from Bangalore at 2.40pm and reach Chennai at 8.45pm.

The train will consist of 10 AC Chair Car coaches, each with a carrying capacity of 120 passengers. To put into perspective, Brindavan Express and Shatabdi Express can carry 73 and 78 passengers per coach respectively.

The distance travelled is 362 km, which is covered in 6 hours, slightly faster than Brindavan Express. Shatabdi Express covers the same distance in 5 hours.

The new Double Decker coaches measure 4,366 mm in height and 3,050 mm in width as against regular coaches which measure 4,025 mm and 3,240 mm.

The Double Decker coaches, built by Rail Coach Factory Kapurthala has several safety features, including an anti climbing design, which prevents coach pile-up in the event of an accident.

Other passenger comfort features include GPS based passenger information system that tells train speed, distance to next station, time remaining, current position etc,.

The coaches also features air suspension system and multiple shock absorbers to make passenger travel comfortable.

Fare for the Double Decker has been kept at Rs. 470. Travelling by Shatabdi Express costs Rs. 595.
