Iconic Double-Decker Buses Make a Comeback in Bangalore to Fight Traffic Blues!

In an effort to tackle the escalating traffic congestion on its urban thoroughfares, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has announced plans to bring back the double-decker buses to the city's streets. This initiative involves the leasing of 10 double-decker AC electric buses under a Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model.

The reintroduction of double-decker buses, absent since 1997 due to operational issues, aims to mitigate traffic woes in Bangalore, recognized as one of the top 10 most congested cities worldwide.

Challenges and Strategic Deployment

While the reintroduction of double-decker buses is welcomed, it raises questions among the public regarding their widespread use across the city. Addressing these concerns, a senior BMTC official highlighted the limitations caused by the city's evolved infrastructure over the last 25 years, including the construction of 42 flyovers, 28 underpasses, and numerous skywalks, which make it impractical for double-decker buses to operate on all roads.

The official emphasized that even regular trucks and buses struggle with the low clearance of underpasses, further complicating the operation of double-decker buses throughout the city.

Identified Routes for Double-Decker Buses

Despite these obstacles, BMTC has pinpointed three routes deemed suitable for the operation of double-decker buses: Majestic (Kempegowda bus station) to Shivajinagar, Majestic to Attibele, and Vijayanagar to Kalasipalya. This initiative is a key component of a larger effort to enhance public transportation in Bangalore, which is currently battling severe congestion issues.

The decision to lease double-decker AC electric buses through a GCC model is strategically supported by funding from the Directorate of Urban Land Transport and the National Clean Air Programme. Unlike standard electric buses, which have a seating capacity of 33-40, the double-decker buses can accommodate approximately 65 passengers, offering a viable solution to the growing demand for public transport in the city.
