Australia's Darwin Lions Club Beer Can Regatta
As far as unique and odd ball races are concerned Australia's Beer Can Regatta is one of the most fun filled events that you can attend. The annual event, as the name says, is about racing boats made out of empty beer cans. The day long event is fast turning from a local tradition to a major tourist attraction.
As you would have guessed Beer Can Regatta is more than just a simple race to the finish line. The race has been improvised to add to the fun factor and the whole day literally gains a festive atmosphere. Here is what you need to know more about it.

Beer Can Regatta is held in Australia's Darwin, the capital of its Northern Territory region, which is at the very top of the continent.

The coastal area, with its partially sheltered bay provides a perfect place for a mega aquatic event, the Beer Can Regatta, which is held by the Combined Lions Clubs of Darwin.

The event was first held on 16 June 1974 at Vestey's Beach. Due its huge success the event turned into an annual event and has since been held at Mindil Beach.

At the event you will get to see the most bizarre and creatively built boats, built literally from thousands of empty beer cans, very resourcefully used.

Boats range from small ones capable of accommodating two to giants built from 50,000 beer cans. Beer cans are obviously collected throughout the year, but that still accounts a huge quantity of the beverage downed.

Moreover, these boats are also allowed to be equipped ‘weapons' to harass competing boats. The most common onboard ‘weapons' used would water cannons, but some boats even have fire cannons.

Once the initial races are completed participants get down to the real business. The final round has to do with collecting ‘booty' spread across the water.

These ‘treasures' have plastic bottles tied to them to act as a buoy with which to find them.

Teams need to recover each item they find and return it back to the shore. This needs to be done with each item recovered. The winner is the team which recovered the most items.

Understandably, the race is chaotic. The ‘naval battles' offers heaps of fun, both to the participants and to the spectators.

This year's Darwin Lions Club Beer Can Regatta was held on 7th July. So, if you have planned a trip to Australia anytime next year here is one place you must not miss out.
