Airbus And Tata Join Forces To Manufacture H125 Helicopters In India

Airbus, the French aerospace giant, is set to commence manufacturing operations in India. The H125 helicopter model will be produced in collaboration with Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL). This initiative aligns with the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission, a central government programme aimed at fostering self-reliance.

The agreement between Airbus and TASL marks a significant milestone as it will be the first time helicopters are manufactured in India. The first Indian-made H125 helicopter is anticipated to take flight by 2026. Currently, eight potential sites for the manufacturing plant are under evaluation, with an official announcement expected soon.

Initially, the Airbus-Tata partnership will establish a facility capable of producing ten helicopters annually. However, plans are in place to scale up production to 50 units over time. "We don't see 10 units as a small alliance," stated company officials, indicating confidence in their phased expansion strategy.

Airbus Helicopters Global Business Vice President Olivier Michelon mentioned that the final decision on the plant's location would be made shortly. Although specific locations have not been disclosed, there are indications that the plant could be operational by October.

Presently, Airbus manufactures around 100 helicopters operating across various regions in India. The H125 model is a single-engine helicopter with a seating capacity for seven people, including the pilot. It serves multiple purposes such as firefighting, law enforcement, rescue missions, and air ambulance services.

Over the past two decades, approximately 500 H125 helicopters have been delivered to countries including India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. This widespread use underscores the model's versatility and reliability.

The collaboration between Airbus and Tata represents a significant step towards enhancing India's aerospace capabilities. By leveraging local manufacturing expertise, this partnership aims to meet both domestic and regional demand for advanced helicopter models.
