Afzal Kahn Turns Down £6 Million Offer For Novelty Licence Plate 'F1'
We have all read stories about super rich people spending millions of dollars on personalized, vanity licence plate. Here is the latest story, coming from the United Kingdom.
Afzal Kahn is a UK based businessman, well known for his automobile customization firm A. Kahn Design, which has worked on everything from rare Ferraris to the Queen's Maybach. Kahn is also know, to a lesser extent, for his collection of expensive cars and a few extremely valuable, not to mention, highly coveted, novelty licence plates which he has acquired over the years.
One such licence plate owned by him is the 'F1', which is said to be his favourite. Kahn was reportedly approached by an unknown wealthy person recently who offered to pay £6 Million ($ 9.35 million) for 'F1', but had to leave empty handed.
"We
have
received
a
significant
multi-million
pound
offer
for
the
F1
plate
which
we
rejected
out
of
hand.
Mr
Kahn
has
no
interest
in
selling
F1,
which
is
his
favourite
plate." Dailymail
quotes
a
A.Kahn
design
spokesperson
as
saying.
"Cherished
number
plates,
unlike
property
or
other
investments
tend
not
to
fluctuate
in
value,
they
only
go
up.
It
really
shouldn't
be
a
shock
to
people
that
the
number
plate
is
worth
millions
of
pounds,"
he
added.
That is very true. Kahn was not the original owner of the F1. The 109 year old registration plate was being used by Chairman of Essex County Council before Kahn bought it for a 'measly' £440,000 in 2008, which remains a record in the UK. That's about 15 times less than what has been offered just 5 years later.
Kahn's F1 plate has been seen on his million dollar Bugatti Veyron and his Mercedes SLR McLaren. Besides F1, Kahn is also the proud owner of the plates '4HRH' and 'NO1'.
We'll end this by telling you about the most money paid for a licence plate. It was in 2008 by a Abu Dhabi businessman Saeed Khouri for a United Arab Emirates registration plate, '1'. He spent £7.1million (~$11 million).
