Adaptive Cruise Control And Advanced Driver Assistance In India

The latest trend in the Indian automotive market is Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). Though this system has been present in most Volvo Cars since some time back, the system started trending in the country with the launch of Mahindra XUV700 and MG Astor.

Though Cruise control is a much-hyped feature in advertisements of cars, the feature is somewhat not suited to Indian driving conditions.

Activating Cruise Control, helps the car maintain a set speed limit without any accelerator input from the driver. This reduces fatigue during long journeys. However, the system gets deactivated once the driver uses the brake pedal to slow down or stop the car.

This means, using Cruise Control on busy Indian highways is a task itself. This is where the Adaptive Cruise Control that is part of ADAS comes into the picture.

The Adaptive Cruise Control works mostly like a Cruise Control but with added assistance. This means the vehicle with Adaptive Cruise Control can automatically adapt to the speed of the vehicle in front without any braking assistance from the driver.

With the Adaptive Cruise Control engaged, the driver doesn't have to brake for any slower moving traffic as the vehicle itself will adapt to the speed of the vehicle in front. Apart from that, the vehicle can cruise at a set speed limit once traffic in front of the vehicle has been cleared up.

Apart from this, Vehicles equipped with ADAS sometimes have Lane-Keep Assist feature. This feature takes the steering control for a few seconds and the system should not be confused with the Lane Departure Warning System, which warns the driver when the vehicle move switched lane.
