Keeping your car in good working order is paramount for it to remain eco-friendly. A car that's serviced and tuned regularly will be more efficient and produce less emissions than a badly maintained car. A tune up can increase your car's efficiency by 4 percent, and replacing a clogged air filter will improve efficiency by up to 10 percent. A faulty oxygen sensor can drop mileage by up to 40 percent, so make sure it is in healthy working condition.

If tyres are not inflated correctly, their rolling resistance increases, making the engine work harder to move the car and thereby using more fuel. Properly inflated tyres will also last longer, thus minimising their impact on the environment. It will also save you precious money.

How one drives is very important when it comes to improving fuel efficiency. Sudden stops and starts, and jerky and aggressive driving takes a serious toll on fuel consumption, so keep a light foot on the gas and change gears smoothly. Also, turn your car off if you are going to be stationary for longer than 30 seconds.

4. Keep the car as light as possible

The heavier a car is, the more fuel is required to move it. So get rid of unnecessary stuff in the boot and the cabin, dismantle roof carriers when not in use, and so on. A lighter car is easier to drive economically.

5. Take care while washing your car

Washing a car at home can use up to 200 litres of precious water, so be careful of how much water you're using. Dry wipe your car as much as possible and try to use biodegradable and CFC-free detergents and soaps during washing, as these won't affect the soil. Eco-friendly cleaners are available now, so it's a good reason to do your bit for the environment.
