New 2026 Indian Motor Laws: New Safety Laws Everyone Must Know
The Indian government will introduce several new motor laws and stricter regulations from 2026. These rules will be mandatory and are being implemented to enhance the safety of vehicle users, pedestrians, and other road users. Many of these laws will be enforced more strictly from next year. Check out the new 2026 Motor Laws to avoid penalties and ensure safer driving.
2026 Indian Motor Laws
Mandatory ABS
From 2026, motorcycles with engines above 125cc must have ABS as standard. Those under 125cc can continue to use the CBS or regular braking system. The ABS helps prevent wheel locking and slipping during emergency braking, thereby enhancing safety. However, this safety feature may increase vehicle prices, as the government's mandatory ABS implementation could raise costs by around 3,000 to 5,000.

No Illegal Modifications
Any modifications to your standard vehicle will be considered illegal and punishable. These include changing the engine, frame structure, chassis, original colour, loud exhaust systems, and silencer tuning.
The purpose of this law is to keep vehicles in their original condition and make them easier to identify. The restriction on loud exhausts will also help reduce noise pollution, as many aftermarket exhaust systems disturb the environment and may emit higher levels of pollutants.

No Flashy Lights
Many riders install aftermarket flashy lights that are extremely bright and colour-changing. These will now be considered illegal, as such LED modifications pose a danger to other road users, especially at night. They cause distraction and reduce visibility, which can lead to serious accidents.
Twin Helmets Across India
Starting from 2026, helmets will be mandatory for both riders and pillion passengers. This rule is already being followed in many Tier-1 cities such as Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi, Chennai, and Hyderabad, but is often ignored in several Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. From next year, this law will be strictly implemented across the country, and heavy fines will be imposed for violations

Minor Driving Could Punish Parents
If a minor is caught driving a four-wheeler or two-wheeler, their parents may be charged and fined, and could also face legal consequences under the new motor laws. This law aims to prevent minors from operating vehicles and ensure safety for all. Parents will also be more responsible to society and to their children.
New Vehicle Ages
Personal vehicles that are over 15 years old will come under the new scrappage policy. After this period, owners must undergo a fitness test to ensure that their vehicle is safe and meets updated emission norms. Private cars and commercial vehicles can be used for up to 20 years.
