1945 Ferrari 375-Plus Becomes Third Most Expensive Car Ever Sold

By Rajkamal

A 1945 Ferrari 375-Plus was sold at the auction for USD 18.2 million in Goodwood's festival of speed that happened the past weekend. This makes it the third most expensive car ever sold at an auction.

The Ferrari 375-Plus, also known as "The Fearsome Four-Nine" was nothing short of a pure-bred race car. It had the biggest engine that Ferrari ever made, a 4.9-litre V12.

Piloted by a few legendary drivers, which included Umberto Maglioli and José Froilán González, it took part in events like Le Mans and the Mille Miglia. The rarity of this Ferrari and people who drove it made it a legend.

Only five cars were ever built and this one is the only survivor. This was enough to boost the bid to eventual £10.7 million. An interesting fact is that last year, during the same Goodwood festival a 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196R Formula 1 Single-Seater, driven by Fangio, sold for a whopping USD 29.65 million, setting a new record for the most expensive car sold at an auction.

The Ferrari 375-Plus which falls short of this Mercedes by a difference of a few millions, is enough to get a comfortable third place after a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4*S N.A.R.T. Spider, sold for USD 27.5 million in 2011.

Being sold for USD 18.2 million, the 375-Plus may not stand as the third most expensive car sold for long because in August, a Ferrari 250 LM - one of the rarest of all Ferraris - will be auctioned. Along with the LM, a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB-4, which was once owned by Steve McQueen himself will also be there. These cars have the potential to break all standing records.
