How To Wash Your Bike Like The Pros

By By: Sharon Supriya

Washing bikes is a regular routine for better maintenance. Here is the perfect guideline to wash bikes effectively for a sparkle that last for long.

Say NO to car wash
Never take the bike for car wash as they use high pressure spray, which the bikes cannot resist. The spray will force its way up to the gaskets to make the whole situation worse. Hand wash your bikes for better results. Remember to turn your fuel tap off and lay the bike over to give it a good wash underneath.

Do not use paper towels
Although it may sound unpractical, avoid using paper towel to wash, dry or wipe off your bike. Paper towels have small wood chips which may scratch your bike.

Washing Solution
Avoid using any household products like detergents to wash your bike as they are too aggressive. They will strip the wax and dull the finish on black engines or plastic housings. Use any car wash solutions. As for cloth rag or mitt, use pure cotton terry cloth rag or a lambs wool mitt. These materials do not scratch your bike but help to trap the dirt effectively.

Spoke wheels, wrinkle black cases, caliper and disk
Clean the spokes with a wide shoelace. Wrap the shoelace a couple of times around the spoke and pull it back and forth over the length of the spoke. Clean those wrinkle black cases with a toothbrush. Open the brake calipers, so that the wheels will roll freely while washing. It also helps get all of the dirt and sand from in between the caliper and disk

What is best Wax or Polish?

This is a very common question which most of the riders brood on. Lets solve the problem by knowing the difference between them.

Polishes owe a very fine grit, which takes off a very small portion of clear coat. Therefore polishes dull the paint. Waxes, have no grit to them. Buy wax that are labeled as "cleaner wax". Cleaner wax has a mild chemical cleaning agent in it, not grit, therefore it does not remove any clear coat, but it can help with pollutants, bug guts...etc. Most bike riders and the Bike service stations prefer Carnauba wax as it protects the paint job from UV rays and pollution.

The finishing touches
Do not let the bike sit wet. Wipe it with clean dry cotton terry cloth towels and then lube the chain. Make sure not to use these towels for any other use. Do not even drop them on the ground as the old towels or the one put on the ground may have pine needles, metal shavings, saw dust or anything trapped in the loops that can scratch your bike. If possible try locking these towels in a sealed container.

Remember a clean bike is the first step to having a well-maintained bike
