How To Set Correct Driving Position – Basic Step-By-Step Guide
It is very common in India to see a variety of drivers following different driving postures. However, most of it is wrong and can do more harm than good. So, here's a step-by-step guide on how to set the correct driving position.
Before we get down with the topic, you really do need to forget the driving position set by Vin Diesel a.k.a Dominic Toretto in the movie The Fast & The Furious - Especially, the one where Vin Diesel has his left arm stretched to the max to reach the steering wheel. While this driving position sure does look good on the Cinema screen, in real life, it pretty much stretches one's ability to drive.
That being said, there is a correct driving position which can minimise accidental error and there are steps to set this driving position in a relatively easy manner. Moreover, given the fact that modern cars come with a variety of adjustments, getting to this driving position is easier than ever before.
Once you get in the driver's seat of the car, the first thing you should adjust is the height of the seat as visibility plays a vital part in driving more than any other senses. However, many people tend to get this simple step wrong by setting the height either to the highest or lowest position.
Step 1: Seat Height
To set the ideal height, the diving seat should be adjusted in such a way that the instrument cluster is not obstructed by the steering wheel and the visibility from all three rear-view mirrors should be more than adequate.
Step 2: Seating Distance
Once setting the ideal height for driving, it is now time to adjust the distance of the seat from the pedals. Setting the driver's seat at the right distance from the pedals is really important for safety, especially during a panic situation.
Diving into the details, the seat should be set in such a way that the driver should be pushed back into the driver's seat while applying pressure on the brakes. This way, not only the effectiveness of the braking can be improved but it can also avoid slipping of the foot during panic braking.
Step 3: Seat Backrest
Now, adjusting the backrest, it is very important to position the backrest in such a way that the shoulder of the driver must rest on the backrest of the driver's seat. This way the slouched driving position can be avoided while driving long distances.
Step 4: Steering Wheel Adjustment
The final step is the adjust the steering wheel. Once you do all the above steps, the steering wheel will be at a near-ideal driving position. However, this can be further improved if the car has an adjustable steering wheel.
The steering wheel should be positioned in such a way that the wrist of the driver should be able to touch the top of the steering wheel. Positioning the steering wheel in such a way will give the driver enough flexibility to do quick manoeuvres during an emergency.
Thoughts About The Correct Driving Position
Following a proper driving position will have a very positive impact on the way you drive as it immediately becomes less stressful. Moreover, this can help with driver fatigue, especially during long drives.
